INTERFAITH SERVICE FOR
NUCLEAR REDUCTION
AT THE NATIONAL CATHEDRAL
The
following verses from the Qur'an were recited by Dr. Imad-ad-Dean Ahmad,
President of the Minaret of Freedom Institute, at the interfaith service for
nuclear reduction at the National Cathedral in Washington DC on June 21, 2000:
And fear tumult or
oppression which affecteth not in particular (only) those of you who do wrong:
and know that God is strict in punishment. (8:25)
But if the enemy incline
towards peace do thou (also) incline towards peace and trust in God: for He is
the one that heareth and knoweth (all things).
Should they intend to deceive thee verily God sufficeth thee: He it is
that hath strengthened thee with his aid and with (the company of) the
believers: And (moreover) He hath put affection between their hearts: not if
thou hadst spent all that is in the earth couldst thou have produced that
affection but God hath done it: for He is Exalted in might Wise. O Messenger!
sufficient unto thee is God (unto thee) and unto those who follow thee among
the believers. (8:61-64)
{Take your allies from]
those who join a group between whom and you there is a treaty (of peace) or
those who approach you with hearts restraining them from fighting you as well
as fighting their own people. If God
had pleased He could have given them power over you and they would have fought
you: therefore if they withdraw from you but fight you not and (instead) send
you (guarantees of) peace then God hath opened no way for you (to war against
them). (4:90)
And the servants of (God)
Most Gracious are those who walk on the earth in humility and when the ignorant
address them they say "Peace!" (25:63)
